August 31, 2008
President Nikki Munro called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. The meeting was held at the Calverton Swim Club.
Board Members Present
Nikki Munro, Kari Banks, Frank Cockrell, Alison Klumpp, Duncan Munro, John Niedermair, Karen Pugh, and Sandy Berberich were present. Thirteen CSC members attended the meeting. (Weather – high 80s and sunny)
President’s Report
Nikki welcomed everyone to the meting and had each of the Board members introduce themselves to the members present. The attending members were: Charlie Pugh, Carol Cann, Nancy Femiano, Mary Lou Falcinelli, Jennifer Bernier, Dave Ruckdeschel, Suzie Niedermair, Karl Krchma, Diane McClusky, Patty Jenkins, Alice Simon, Laurie Zebrowski and Karl Berberich.
Nikki thanked our new pool manager, Dan Feher, and the guards for a job well done. The Board and the staff have been working hard to improve the communications with the membership through 2008 Handbook, the website, www.calvertonswimclub.com, monthly newsletters, and top ten rules posting in English and Spanish at the club and on the website. This has resulted in improved rule following.
Family Fun Day, our traditional last day of the season celebration is tomorrow. There is a DJ, two moonbounces, free popcorn and cotton candy from 1-5 pm; a volleyball tournament to benefit the family of Richard Findley; and a Kentucky Fried Dinner hosted by Bernie Karns.
For next year, the Board would like to 1) maintain the current level of safety, 2) improve aesthetics, concentrating on the grounds and the bathrooms, 3) ask the members to consider helping on Volunteer Day (a Saturday in May after Mother’s Day but prior to Opening Day), 4) improve the notice of the by-laws, 5) improve the visibility of the Board, and 6) improve the marketing of memberships by concentrating on word of mouth and referrals.
Treasurer’s Report
Duncan presented the following comments for the Treasurer’s Report. Expected income was $24,000 below the budget estimate with the majority a result of nonpayment of dues. However, expenses are $19,000 below expected. A decision will be made by the Board regarding the amount to be repaid to the Reserve Fund. Next year’s season will be one week longer resulting in an increase in our management contract of approximately $7,000. Utilities and insurance continue to increase. Dues remained at the same level as in 2007. Dues have only increased twice since 1995; once in 2003 and again in 2007. Duncan asked that the members not be surprised if dues increase next year.
Membership Committee Report
There are 29 members who have not paid their 2008 dues and the pool still owns 10 memberships from members that did not pay their dues in 2007. The 29 unpaid memberships will become the property of the Club as of December 1 and will be sold for the amount of outstanding dues. We are currently selling the 10 memberships that we own for $350. Members were asked to encourage their friends and families to spread the word that there are memberships available for purchase.
There are currently 50 memberships for sale. Seventeen of those are unpaid's from 2008. Our members are encouraged to sell their memberships on their own and notify the Membership Committee so that the transfer in ownership can be documented.
Operations/Engineering Committee Report
The Operations/Engineering Committee has had a busy year handling a lot of the items that Tom Stickles used to do. The Committee feels that they are making good progress on identifying and assigning the jobs that need to be completed. Some of the work that has been done is painting of the fence, adjusting the sprinkler system, revamping of the horseshoe pits, and installing the new sign. Frank has also worked out a barter agreement with the construction company working on Galway Elementary. In exchange for weekday and Saturday parking on the side lot, they have replaced the volleyball lights, removed some large trash items and are in the process of removing some dead trees. Once their work is finished, they are to repair the parking lot.
The Board appreciates all of the neighbors that keep an eye on the club and report any problems during the off season.
Some of the projects being considered for next year are white coating of the shallow end, if necessary, repair of the diving boards and improving the sound system. The Board will conduct a walk-about on Sunday, September 7th before Doggie Day (Noon to PM). One of the members asked if the safety latch on the gate to the baby pool could be improved to automatically close.
Swim and Dive Team Reports
Swim team had 110 members aged 4 to 18. The team successfully hosted some major events and will be in I division next season. The team is currently working on having repairs made to the bulkhead. Dive team has 33 members. They will be Division 4 again next season. The Swim and Dive Teams worked well together during the past season.
Social
Teen night was August 16, had 30 teens attend and was a relatively quiet but successful night. Pre-teen night was August 21 and had 130 attendees. Requiring guests to be accompanied by members has made the number of attendees more manageable. Crab Feast was August 23 and was very successful. The Family Camp-out was rained out. The, new this season, “Noodle Nights” have been very popular. They are not a replacement for float nights. Decisions will be made during the off-season on the number and variety of social events for next year. Any suggestion should be put in the suggestion box on the website. In answer to a member question, members were reminded to sign up on the Yahoo CSC group to receive email notices about club activities.
New Business
Nikki welcomed Laurie Zebrowski as a new Board member as a result of the election held earlier in the day, then thanked the members for attending the meeting.
One of the members thanked the Board for their service to the club.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
